JK BEAUTY BELDI FOUTA
Organic Natural Human made - Eco - Friendly Healthy
The towel you are about to use is UNLIKE any other you’ve used before.
We work directly with Turkey’s remaining weavers. Beyond these artisans and a few scattered individuals, there is virtually nothing left of Turkey’s once-thriving weaving industry. In just 35 short years, nearly all the country’s traditional weaving villages have disappeared.
A woven item is very special in today's market, not just because of its beauty, but due to its endurance: flat-woven towels outlast factory-made by almost three times and, in the case of thicker, looped towels, between five and six times longer. When you combine the strength and integrity that a woven product can offer with the highest quality natural fibres, and that aspect of human soul in a handmade piece, then you have a product with a level of quality that is a rarity these days.
All articles sheets, robes, table covers, and scarves are made on old-style shuttled looms, and most of what we do is limited edition. We work only with natural materials. Anything with cotton threads is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic Turkish cotton, which certifies that our cotton threads are organically grown, processed and dyed. Beyond the environmental benefits of using organic cotton - for the earth, the water table, and the people who pick the cotton - organically processed cotton is more absorbent, and releases moisture more effectively and has its own natural bacteria fighting ability, which has not been damaged by chemically processing and, therefore, will not smell musty, go hard over time and will be easier to clean.
We also work with the best quality linen on the market. Linen was always the fibre of choice, as an even longer lasting, more absorbent and breathable textile; however, when industry came along, machines were too fast to cope with the thicker linen threads due to their unevenness and the slub (little hairs) along the thread. So, industry all but abandoned linen, and switched to cotton. Even on a loom, it is necessary to slow down, when weaving linen, in comparison to cotton. Towels made with linen take 50 percent more time to make than those made with cotton. The thicker threads that we use in our pieces are difficult to find, but provide a finished product that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
The last of the natural fibres we use is silk. We personally sources and buys all the threads for all the weavers, EXCEPT for the silk weavers. The last family in Turkey still doing the entire process of silk (for textiles) themselves by hand. Our silk weavers raise their own silk worms, and spin, reel and dye the silk threads, as well as weaving the final products. Silk is for life and stronger than steal, when reeled and spun properly.
All of our weavers are Turkish and all of our materials are sourced in Turkey.
All our items are of exceptional quality but, in particular, our thick, looped towels are - bar none - the best quality in the world. The structure of a looped towel made on a loom is completely different than that of a factory towel of any size. The Ottoman weavers invented the looping technique on the loom in the late 17th century, and the towels they produced were world renowned, not just for the innovative method, but because the towels lasted for such an incredibly long time. Even with today’s modern washing machines and dryers, towels made from GOTS-certified organic cotton will last a minimum of 20 years; with linen, a minimum of 30 years; and with silk, no less than 40 years.
The ‘other’ Turkish towel – the pestamel - have become extremely popular throughout the world in the last few years. Flat-woven and lightweight, this all-purpose piece is one of the best items you can own. Our methods, and our choices in quality of fibre, will leave you with a piece that will outlast, be easier to wash, and is far more enjoyable to use than all the other machine-made competitors.
